NFL Rumors: Jon Gruden Eyeing NFL Comeback; Several Teams Interested

Jon Gruden watches Detroit Lions practice in 2025.

Former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden is making it clear he wants back in the NFL.

The 61-year-old Super Bowl winner has been spotted at several training camps this summer, including the Detroit Lions, as he works to position himself for a return to coaching. “Hopefully I'm not done,” Gruden told reporters at Lions camp. “I'm about to make a comeback. I'm working hard to maybe get one more shot.”

Several Teams Interested in Gruden as Coordinator

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport revealed that multiple teams have at least discussed the idea of bringing Gruden on as a coordinator. While no head coaching opportunities have surfaced yet, Rapoport noted that the interest is real and that any legal issues related to Gruden’s ongoing lawsuit against the NFL could be resolved if a team made a serious push to hire him.

“It would be hard to have a better hire than that as a coordinator,” Rapoport said on The Dan Patrick Show.

Gruden, who last coached in 2021 before resigning amid the leaked email scandal, continues to lean on his reputation as a quarterback developer and offensive mind. He’s remained active in football through media work and consulting, but has made it clear he’d accept almost any coaching opportunity, even at the college or high school level, just to get back on the sidelines.

Can Gruden Land a Job Before the Season?

Gruden’s record as a head coach (117-112) and his ability to elevate quarterbacks makes him an appealing hire for teams needing a boost on offense. The question remains whether NFL owners are ready to welcome him back given his past controversy.

For now, he appears determined to prove he’s ready for another shot, and with coordinator interest already surfacing, his comeback may happen sooner than later.
