Cincinnati Bengals Release Veteran Running Back

The Cincinnati Bengals announced the release of veteran running back Zack Moss, ending his tenure with the team after just one season.

Moss, 27, had been recovering from a broken neck suffered in the 2024 campaign and had not been participating in training camp.

Moss, who initially signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Bengals in 2024, restructured his contract this offseason to reduce his 2025 salary to $1.8 million. His release will result in approximately $1.88 million in dead money against Cincinnati’s cap while saving the team $1.2 million in cap space.

Moss’ Bengals Tenure Cut Short by Injury

The Florida native’s injury forced him onto injured reserve after Week 8 last season, when scans revealed he had broken his neck in three places. Despite playing through the injury for several weeks, Moss ultimately finished 2024 with 242 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 74 carries in eight games.

Moss had hoped to return to the field in 2025, but the Bengals’ running back room became crowded with the addition of Samaje Perine and rookie Tahj Brooks joining Chase Brown. The move opens up more opportunities for the younger backs in training camp.

What’s Next for Moss and the Bengals

Moss, who has previously played for the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts, recorded his best season in 2023 with Indianapolis, racking up 986 total yards and seven touchdowns. Now a free agent, he’ll seek to continue his comeback elsewhere.

For the Bengals, the running back depth chart is currently led by Brown, with Perine, Brooks, Gary Brightwell, Kendall Milton, and Quali Conley competing for spots behind him.
