NFL Free Agency: Star DT Christian Wilkins Drawing Interest From His Favorite Childhood Team

The New England Patriots could be eyeing a major defensive line upgrade following the release of Christian Wilkins by the Las Vegas Raiders

Head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters Friday that the team would "have a conversation" about pursuing the former first-round pick, citing his longstanding familiarity with the defensive tackle dating back to his Ohio State recruiting days.

Wilkins became a free agent Thursday after the Raiders terminated the final three years of his four-year, $110 million contract. Las Vegas reportedly voided $35.2 million in guaranteed money due to Wilkins' refusal to undergo an additional foot surgery, instead choosing rehab after suffering a Jones fracture last October. He has since filed a grievance through the NFLPA.

Patriots’ Defensive Line Could Use a Veteran Boost

New England finished last season ranked last in the NFL in sacks and 23rd in rushing yards allowed per game. While they bolstered their front seven this offseason with signings like defensive tackle Milton Williams and edge rusher Harold Landry III, adding Wilkins could instantly elevate the unit.

The 29-year-old brings a proven track record of production, tallying 371 tackles, 22.5 sacks, 45 tackles for loss, and 19 passes defended in 86 career games with the Miami Dolphins and Raiders. Despite the injury concerns, his ability to disrupt both the run and pass game makes him one of the most intriguing available free agents.

Timing and Health Will Dictate Next Steps

Vrabel stressed that the Patriots need more information about Wilkins’ current health status before making a move. However, his familiarity with Wilkins from his time as a college recruiter could help facilitate talks. If cleared medically, the Patriots could make a cap-friendly offer that allows Wilkins to return to full strength while giving New England a veteran presence in the trenches.
