NFL Rumors: 49ers Interested In Signing Recently Released Wide Receiver

New England Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne reacts during 2024 game.

The New England Patriots have released wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, and it didn’t take long for his former team to emerge as a top suitor.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, the San Francisco 49ers have “high interest” in reuniting with the 30-year-old, who spent the first four seasons of his career in the Bay Area.

Why the 49ers Need Bourne Back

San Francisco’s receiver room has been plagued by injuries and uncertainty. Brandon Aiyuk is still working back from major knee surgery, Jauan Jennings is dealing with both a calf injury and contract dispute, and younger options like Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins are also sidelined.

With Demarcus Robinson suspended for the first three games, the 49ers are in desperate need of a reliable, experienced target. Bourne, who knows Kyle Shanahan’s system and locker room well, fits the bill.

Bourne’s Career and Fit in San Francisco

Bourne first broke into the NFL with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2017, quickly becoming a trusted option in Shanahan’s offense. He posted his best 49ers season in 2020 with 667 yards before signing with New England, where he delivered a career-high 800 yards and five touchdowns in 2021.

Over his eight NFL seasons, Bourne has totaled 3,714 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns. While his last three years in New England were quieter, the 49ers could view him as a stabilizing presence who could step in immediately and contribute.

The 49ers have already added Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the roster, but with their top options banged up, a reunion with Kendrick Bourne could be a move needed to restore balance to their offense before Week 1.
