Patriots Claim Fan Favorite Quarterback Off Waivers From Giants

New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito throws the ball during 2025 preseason game.

Tommy DeVito’s run with the New York Giants has come to an end, but he isn’t leaving the East Coast spotlight.

The quarterback known as “Tommy Cutlets” was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots just one day after the Giants released him during final roster cuts. New England acted quickly, adding DeVito as their third quarterback behind rookie starter Drake Maye and veteran backup Joshua Dobbs.

Patriots Add Depth at Quarterback

The Patriots had been looking to strengthen their depth chart after releasing undrafted free agent Ben Wooldridge, and DeVito’s strong preseason showing against them made him an easy target. Just last week, he went 17-of-20 for 198 yards and three touchdowns in New York’s 42-10 win over New England, giving coach Mike Vrabel and his staff a first-hand look at his ability to command an offense.

Vrabel called the move part of “strengthening the roster at a premium position,” crediting new front office executive Ryan Cowden for offering valuable insight from his past ties with the Giants.

Giants Move On From Fan Favorite

DeVito had been a fan favorite in New York since breaking through as an undrafted free agent in 2023, but the Giants crowded quarterback room left him without a role. The arrivals of Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and first-round pick Jaxson Dart sealed his exit, though the Giants hoped he might return on the practice squad.

Instead, New England swooped in, giving DeVito another chance to prove himself. Across his 12 career games, including eight starts, he has completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,358 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Patriots’ roster shuffle also included claiming cornerback Charles Woods and releasing wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, whose trade market never materialized.
