NFL Rumors: Vikings Get Brutal Injury News On Two Key Players

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy reacts during 2025 game.

The Minnesota Vikings will be without two key starters when they face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3.

Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy suffered a high ankle sprain during Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons and is expected to miss two to four weeks, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Running back Aaron Jones, meanwhile, is dealing with a hamstring injury and is also unlikely to play, according to head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Carson Wentz to Start at Quarterback

With McCarthy sidelined, veteran Carson Wentz will take over as the starter.

The 10th-year quarterback signed with Minnesota just weeks ago but has quickly impressed coaches with his command of the offense.

Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer will serve as the backup. The injuries come at a tough time for the Vikings, who are 1-1 and already battling depth concerns along the offensive line. Center Ryan Kelly and tackle Justin Skule entered the concussion protocol Sunday, while Christian Darrisaw is still working back from ACL and MCL surgery.

Bengals Also Missing Joe Burrow

Minnesota’s opponent won’t be at full strength either.

The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to be without quarterback Joe Burrow after he suffered a turf toe injury in Week 2. While the matchup will now feature two backup quarterbacks, the bigger storyline for the Vikings is how McCarthy’s development will once again be delayed by injuries.

After missing all of 2024 with a knee issue, the 2024 first-round pick will now be sidelined again just two weeks into his starting role.
