Jets Sign Running Back After Placing Braelon Allen On IR

Cincinnati Bengals running back Khalil Herbert runs the ball during 2025 game.

The New York Jets will be without running back Braelon Allen for at least the next month after placing him on injured reserve Thursday.

Allen, who sprained his MCL during Monday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins, suffered the injury while returning a kickoff in the second quarter. The earliest he can return is Week 10 against the Cleveland Browns following New York’s bye.

Jets Lose Braelon Allen to Injury, Add Khalil Herbert

Allen had served as the primary backup to Breece Hall, rushing for 76 yards on 18 carries this season. His absence leaves a hole in the Jets’ depth chart, one the team quickly addressed by signing veteran Khalil Herbert off the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad.

Herbert, who has played for the Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, and Indianapolis Colts since 2021, has racked up 1,905 rushing yards and 11 total touchdowns across 56 career games. He also brings kick return experience, something the Jets’ special teams could use after recent struggles.

The 27-year-old Herbert will now compete with rookie Isaiah Davis to serve as Hall’s primary backup until Allen returns.
