NFL Rumors: Saints Make Surprising Quarterback Change For Rest Of Season

New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough throws the ball during 2025 game.

The New Orleans Saints are officially turning the page at quarterback.

Head coach Kellen Moore announced that rookie Tyler Shough will remain the team’s starter for the rest of the 2025 season, ending any debate following last week’s benching of Spencer Rattler

“Tyler’s starting — we’re not looking back,” Moore told reporters via Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.

Shough replaced Rattler midway through the Saints’ 23–3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, completing 17 of 30 passes for 128 yards and one interception. It wasn’t flashy, but it gave Moore enough confidence to see what the second-round pick out of Louisville can do long-term.

Shough, 26, showed poise and strong mechanics in limited preseason action, completing 66.7% of his throws for 333 yards and a touchdown across three games.

Shough Gets His Shot After Rattler’s Struggles

Rattler’s tenure as the starter ends with a 1–13 record in 14 starts across two seasons, including six turnovers and seven sacks over his last two games. While his efficiency improved early in 2025, his inconsistency in protecting the ball ultimately led to the switch.

The Saints are 1–7 and rank 27th in total offense, averaging just 295 yards and 16 points per game a glaring sign that Moore needed a spark.

A New Era Begins in New Orleans

Shough’s first career start will come Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, one of the league’s top defensive units.

Despite the tough matchup, Moore emphasized that the team plans to ride with the rookie through the remainder of the season to evaluate him for 2026 and beyond. With nine games left, this is Shough’s chance to prove he can develop into New Orleans’ long-term starter.
