Cowboys Reveal Shocking Update On George Pickens

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens reacts during 2025 game.

The Dallas Cowboys have been at the center of one of the offseason's more complicated receiver situations since placing the non-exclusive franchise tag on George Pickens back in late February.

The tag carries a $27.29 million fully guaranteed price for 2026, and it came with the implicit possibility of a trade if the right offer materialized.

According to COO and co-owner Stephen Jones, that offer has not come close to materializing.

"You hate to get into things like that," Jones said on Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan. "But no, we've had no one call with interest in George Pickens."

The statement is notable on its own. Pickens just came off a career year in his first season in Dallas, posting 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns after being acquired from the Steelers for a third-round pick last offseason.

For a player who just put up those numbers at 25 years old, a completely cold trade market is a surprise.

Why the Price May Be the Problem

The non-exclusive franchise tag comes with a specific trade complication.

For another team to acquire Pickens, they would need to send two first-round picks to Dallas in compensation. That is a steep price for any receiver who is not a proven top-three option in the league, and it may explain why phones have been quiet.

Owner Jerry Jones said at the Annual League Meeting in March that the club has long-term plans for Pickens in Dallas.

No extension talks have made any real progress, though, and the two sides have until July 15 to reach a long-term agreement before Pickens is locked into the tag for the season.

Pickens has yet to sign the tag, and coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged he is not sure whether Pickens will show up for the team's voluntary minicamp beginning April 20.

The Bigger Question

Whether Stephen Jones is telling the whole truth or maneuvering publicly is worth considering.

Per Pro Football Rumors, if no progress is made on an extension over the coming months, trade calls may eventually materialize as teams lose out on other receiver targets during and after the draft.

Some league insiders have suggested the Cowboys could simply tag Pickens again in 2027 if no deal gets done, which would push the financial decision further down the road.

For now, Pickens is a franchise-tagged receiver with no signed tender, no extension in sight, and apparently no suitors.

That is a strange place for one of the better young wideouts in football to be sitting one week before the draft.
