NFL Rumors: Vikings Meet With Former 49ers Wide Receiver

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings reacts during 2025 game.

Jauan Jennings has been one of the more puzzling unsigned free agents of the offseason, a receiver who led the San Francisco 49ers with nine touchdown catches last season and still finds himself without a team nearly two months after hitting the market.

That may be about to change.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Jennings will visit with the Minnesota Vikings over the next two days, the first formal visit for the 28-year-old since free agency opened in March.

The reason Jennings has gone this long unsigned appears to be pretty simple actually.

His asking price has not aligned with how teams have valued him, and the 49ers opted not to bring him back despite interest from both sides.

For now, Minnesota is the team making a move.

Why the Vikings Make Sense

The cap space opened when Minnesota traded Jonathan Greenard to the Philadelphia Eagles, freeing up more than $12 million for the 2026-27 season.

The Vikings did not draft a wide receiver with any of their nine picks last weekend despite wide receiver being identified as one of three positions of clear need heading into the draft.

They lost Jalen Nailor to the Raiders in free agency on a three-year, $35 million deal, which removed their primary WR3 from the depth chart.

Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison are locked in as the top two options, and third-year receiver Tai Felton managed just three catches for 25 yards as a rookie.

That is a significant drop-off from the WR2 and WR3 spots down, and Jennings addresses it directly.

His statistical resume over the last two seasons is strong.

He caught 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, then caught 55 passes for 643 yards and nine touchdowns in 2025, leading San Francisco in scoring despite not leading the team in targets.

Beyond the numbers, Jennings is a physical receiver who brings downfield blocking ability in the run game, which fits exactly what Kevin O'Connell values in a receiver and has been cited by multiple analysts as a reason the Vikings specifically are an appealing landing spot.

49ers GM John Lynch said simply after Jennings departed: "He'll find a good home, and Jauan will go play great football for someone."

The Bigger Free Agency Picture

Multiple sources have noted he could opt to wait until after June 1, when teams will clear additional cap space from post-June 1 designations, giving him a wider and potentially wealthier market to negotiate with.

The Dolphins showed interest early in free agency but do not have the cap room to meet his asking price, and the Commanders have also been mentioned, along with the Rams.
