Green Bay Packers Sign 16-Year Veteran Quarterback

The Green Bay Packers announced that they have signed quarterback Tyrod Taylor and released Desmond Ridder in a corresponding move, per GM Brian Gutekunst's office.

Taylor, who turns 37 in August, is entering his 16th NFL season and will wear No. 6 for Green Bay, his eighth organization since being drafted by the Ravens in the sixth round in 2011.

He fills the backup job vacated by Malik Willis, who impressed during his two seasons backing up Jordan Love and leveraged that performance into a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Miami Dolphins in free agency.

Green Bay did not draft a quarterback during last weekend's draft, leaving Ridder and Kyle McCord as the primary options competing for the backup job before Taylor's arrival changed the picture.

With Taylor in the building, he is the clear frontrunner to be Love's primary backup heading into training camp.

What Taylor Brings

The case for Taylor in a backup role has been consistent across every organization that has signed him.

He is 29-31-1 as a starter over 16 seasons with a career 87.7 passer rating, numbers that compare favorably to Ridder's 82.6 rating and represent an upgrade in the experience and floor departments.

New defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, meeting local media Monday, offered an immediate endorsement when a reporter asked what he knew of Taylor.

"He's a good player," Gannon said. "Played against him a long time. He's accurate, he's mobile, that's two things that pop up. He's a playmaker. He can deliver the ball accurately and it's hard to get him down in the pocket."

Taylor has rushed for 2,424 yards and 20 touchdowns on 434 career carries at a 5.6 yard per attempt clip, giving the Packers at least some of the same mobility element they valued in Willis as a backup option.

He also brings legitimate starting experience, having made 62 career starts across Baltimore, Buffalo, Cleveland, the Chargers, Houston, the Giants, and the Jets.

Last season with the Jets he started four games, completing under 60 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and five interceptions against a 72.9 passer rating, functional if unspectacular numbers for a 36-year-old on a struggling team.

With McCord and Kyron Drones also in camp competition behind Taylor, Green Bay now has four quarterbacks on the 90-man roster.
