Cleveland Browns & Jacksonville Jaguars Linked To Trade

The Shedeur Sanders trade rumors picked up a new wrinkle this week, with a proposal sending him to the Jacksonville Jaguars gaining traction online and reuniting him with a familiar face.

The chatter started with ESPN Cleveland's Tony Rizzo, who reported on June 22 that there are ongoing talks and calls about the availability of the Browns' second-year quarterback.

From there, a fan-made trade proposal sending Sanders to Jacksonville went viral on social media, drawing thousands of likes and plenty of reactions.

The Jacksonville Appeal

The idea would put Sanders behind Trevor Lawrence while reuniting him with Travis Hunter, his former Colorado teammate and close friend.

Jacksonville currently has Nick Mullens, Carter Bradley, and Joey Aguilar behind Lawrence on the depth chart.

Sanders would bring more upside than that group, even if the notion of moving strictly into a backup role did not sit well with everyone.

"Yall tryna force him to be a backup when he played better than half the QBs drafted," one fan responded.

The connection to Hunter is the hook that made the proposal spread, but the reality of Sanders accepting a clear backup job behind an established starter is what gives the idea friction.

Why the Browns Are Pumping the Brakes

Despite the chatter, Cleveland's own beat writers have downplayed the likelihood of a trade.

On the Orange and Brown Talk podcast, longtime Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com shut down speculation that a Sanders trade is a priority.

"In this case, I just don't really think there's too much to it at this point," Cabot said. "They've already said exactly what they're doing. They're heading into training camp with a two-way battle between these two players, Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. I think that's how it's going to go."

Cabot acknowledged Sanders could be fielding interest.

"I wouldn't be surprised if he's fielding calls, listening to offers from some teams, talking to teams and whatnot," she said. "But right now, I don't see that happening. Of course, it could possibly happen, but the fact that somebody is reporting that right now, I don't see that as anything that's on the front burner."

The Year 2 Picture

Sanders fell to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, selected by Cleveland with the No. 144 overall pick, and started seven games as a rookie.

He went 3-4 as a starter, completing 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, with growing pains but enough flashes to keep the Browns interested in seeing what a second year looks like.

Head coach Todd Monken has praised Sanders' offseason development.

"I think he's being more decisive," Monken said. "It just feels like he's making quicker decisions, the ball is coming out of his hands. His ability to process quicker and get the ball out of his hands, and eliminate lost-yards plays, it's gonna be huge for us."

With Watson returning from his second Achilles surgery and a four-quarterback room that also includes Dillon Gabriel, the Browns face a numbers crunch that fuels the trade speculation.

But for now, the message from inside the building is that Sanders is competing for the starting job, not being shopped to Jacksonville or anyone else.

The Browns open the 2026 season, fittingly, against the Jaguars on September 13.
