Commanders Sign Recent Top Kicker To Become Their New Starter

The Washington Commanders made a major move on Tuesday, signing kicker Jake Moody off the Chicago Bears practice squad to become their new starter.

The signing comes just 24 hours after Washington released veteran Matt Gay, who missed two key field goal attempts in their Week 11 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Moody, a 2023 third round pick who once carried the reputation of being one of the strongest legs in his draft class, now gets another chance to secure a starting role in the NFL after brief stops with San Francisco and Chicago.

Commanders Hope Moody Can Fix Kicking Struggles

Moody was impressive during his short stint with Chicago this season, converting eight of nine field goal attempts across two games and drilling all three of his extra point tries. He also delivered a game winner in Week 7 against New Orleans.

Meanwhile, Gay’s inconsistency from distance has been an issue for Washington all year. He made just 13 of 19 attempts overall and only four of nine from beyond fifty yards, contributing to close losses and frustration on the sideline. The Commanders hope Moody can provide stability as they try to salvage momentum entering their bye week.

Fresh Start Opportunity For Moody

Moody now steps into a starting role with a real opportunity to play his way into a future contract. He becomes an unrestricted free agent in March unless Washington chooses to extend him.

If he performs well, the Commanders may finally stabilize a position that has been a revolving door all season. And if Washington chooses to move on at the end of the year, Moody’s showcase could attract interest across the league as teams look to upgrade their special teams units.
