Detroit Lions Lose Star Player for Rest of Season Due to Injury
The Detroit Lions got the news they did not want to hear on tight end Sam LaPorta’s status.
Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed the Pro Bowl standout recently underwent back surgery and is “going to be out for a while,” adding the team would be fortunate to see him again this season.
Campbell called LaPorta’s chances of returning “very, very slim,” even as he stressed that the procedure went well for LaPorta’s long term outlook.
Dan Campbell’s update on Sam LaPorta’s return
LaPorta originally injured his back in the Week 10 win over the Washington Commanders and was placed on injured reserve before the Week 11 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In nine games, the 24 year old had 40 receptions for 489 yards and three touchdowns, remaining one of Jared Goff’s most trusted options on third down and in the red zone.

Campbell admitted losing LaPorta “hurts” but framed the decision around protecting the player’s future, saying the surgery outcome was positive even if it essentially ends his 2025 campaign.
How the Lions will replace Sam LaPorta at tight end
With LaPorta sidelined, Brock Wright steps in as the Lions’ top tight end after playing 49 offensive snaps in Philadelphia and catching two passes for eight yards.
Veteran Ross Dwelley is also in the mix, while Campbell expects practice squad tight end Anthony Firkser to be involved against the New York Giants as part of a committee approach.
