NFL Rumors: One Team To Go Really Hard After Mac Jones This Offseason

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones throws the ball during 2025 game.

Minnesota’s quarterback room is heading back into the rumor blender, and one name has been circling the team for months in Mac Jones.

Multiple reports have tied the Minnesota Vikings to the idea of trading for the San Francisco 49ers backup as a low-cap hit, former first-round option who can either push J.J. McCarthy or potentially steady the offense if McCarthy’s health and consistency keep wobbling.

Vikings quarterback plan points to Mac Jones

Head coach Kevin O’Connell has been open about wanting real competition, and Jones fits the “reclamation with upside” lane Minnesota just rode with Sam Darnold.

The tricky part is the front office context. The Vikings just fired GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, so until a new one is hired, the path forward, especially at the quarterback position, will be unclear.

49ers leverage and a bidding war could raise the cost

From San Francisco’s side, the incentive to move Jones is only there if the return stings in a good way.

He showed he can step in when Brock Purdy is banged up, and he played some really solid football in Purdy’s place, with the 49ers continuing to win games.

In 11 games this season, Jones recorded 69.6% of his pass attempts for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions. The completion percentage was the best of his career, and the six interceptions were the lowest mark he's put up over his five seasons in the NFL.

That kind of evidence is exactly why Minnesota wouldn’t be alone.

If teams like the New York JetsCleveland Browns, or Arizona Cardinals start circling for affordable QB solutions, the asking price can jump from “reasonable dart throw” to paying real draft capital fast.
