Jets Got Turned Down By Quarterback in Free Agency

New York Jets head Coach Aaron Glenn watches from the sidelines during 2025 game.

The New York Jets thought they had a real shot at Carson Wentz.

Instead, they got a reality check.

The veteran quarterback reportedly turned down New York in free agency, choosing to return to the Minnesota Vikings even if it means a smaller role in 2026.

Carson Wentz Jets decision leaves New York searching

For weeks, Wentz was heavily linked to the Jets, especially after they acquired Geno Smith to be their starter.

With offensive coordinator Frank Reich in place, the connection made sense, and Reich reportedly really wanted Wentz in New York.

Reich coached Wentz during his best years with the Philadelphia Eagles and later with the Indianapolis Colts, including that near-MVP 2017 season where Wentz threw 33 touchdowns.

Reports indicate he preferred returning to Minnesota over joining the Jets as a backup, even if that means sitting behind a crowded quarterback room that includes Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy.

Vikings offer familiarity as Jets lose another option

Wentz started five games for the Minnesota Vikings last season, throwing for 1,216 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions while completing over 65 percent of his passes.

He kept the team afloat during injuries, even while dealing with a torn labrum that eventually required surgery.

For the Jets, the veteran quarterback market is thinning quickly.

Andy Dalton was dealt, Jimmy Garoppolo could land elsewhere, and options like Joe Flacco or Tyrod Taylor don’t offer any long-term upside.

Right now, the Jets are left with Geno Smith as QB1 and a growing need behind him.
